Understanding Social Preferences with Simple Tests
Departures from self-interest in economic experiments have recently inspired models of “social preferences”. We design a range of simple experimental games that test these theories more directly than existing experiments. Our experiments show that subjects are more concerned with increasing social welfare—sacrificing to increase the payoffs for all recipients, especially low-payoff recipients—t...

In this paper, I use data from the British Household Panel Survey and Understanding Society to investigate the social and political attitudes of cultural omnivores. I report a threefold typology of visual arts consumption that is consistent with previous research. Then by linking data across the two panel surveys, I show that cultural consumption is associated with a wide range of social attitu...
متن کاملUnderstanding Data Quality: Social and Cultural Aspects
Data quality problems are widespread in practice, particularly in data warehousing and the implementation of enterprise resource planning systems. Attempts to define data quality include lists of data quality dimensions and more comprehensive theory-based frameworks. This paper extends the semiotics-based data quality framework proposed by Shanks and Darke. In particular, it discusses the socia...
متن کاملToward Understanding Children’s and Adults’ Encounters with Social Robots
While the design of social robots, has engaged researchers for some time, only recently have the human implications of interaction with such robots been considered. In this paper, we address how children and adults behave toward and think about the social robot AIBO. Our work is informed by a conceptual framework that draws on constructs within cognitive psychology: the essentialist theory of c...
